11th May – The Number One Album in Australia – 1992 (The Cure – Wish)

The Number One Album in Australia on the 11th May 1992 was Wish from UK act The Cure.

It also entered the British charts at Number One and the American charts at Number Two.

Led by the inimitable Robert Smith, The Cure formed in 1976 and became one of the world’s most important post punk musical acts.

Throughout their career, The Cure released consistently great albums as the 8 studio albums preceding the release of Wish attest:

Three Imaginary Boys (1979)

Seventeen Seconds (1980)

Faith (1981)

Pornography (1982)

The Top (1984)

The Head On The Door (1985)

Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me (1987)

Disintegration (1989)

Wish was recorded throughout 1991-1992 in England at The Manor in Oxfordshire; with production duties handled by Robert Smith and David M Allen (who has worked with Depeche Mode, The Human League & Neneh Cherry).

Three singles were released from the longplayer, High, Friday I’m In Love and A Letter To Elise.

The Cure undertook an international tour to promote the album’s successful release & included a number of shows around Australia in their schedule (where I was fortunate enough to see every show).

The Australian live shows were hypnotic, the incendiary atmosphere was passionate, edgy, with wave upon wave upon wave of psych guitar creating swirlpools of sonic layers washing over you.

Then poptastic moments – Friday I’m In Love – erupted, bursting through and taking the experience to another level.

A sublime immersive experience & easily in the top 10 tours I have ever seen.

Wish is a welcome and essential addition to the canon of work from The Cure.

It further illustrates the songwriting prowess from Robert Smith and his bandmates which has seen them create a deep and lasting connection with cross generational audiences around the world.

Friday I’m In Love sees the band performing the song on a soundstage in front of various backdrops whilst the members of The Cure play around with various costumes & props whilst extras wander throughout, chaos ensues and eventually the set is trashed.
