Carpenters – The Number One Album in UK – 2nd June 1974 (The Singles : 1969–1973)

The Number One Album in UK on the 2nd June 1974 was from The Carpenters – The Singles : 1969–1973.

The Carpenters – siblings Karen and Richard Carpenter – were an American musical duo that with their melodic pop became one of the best-selling music artists of all time.

The album – The Carpenters – The Singles : 1969–1973 – stayed at the top of the UK charts for a total of 17 weeks and in the States went on to sell 8+ million copies.

The album became one of the best-selling albums of the 1970s – it was the best selling album of 1974 in the UK – and featured a newly recorded version of Top of the World, Ticket to Ride plus other well known songs such as Superstar, Rainy Days and Mondays and Yesterday Once More.

Yesterday Once More –

We’ve Only Just Begun –

Ticket To The Ride –

Superstar –

Sonic Youth – Superstar –

Redd Kross – Yesterday Once More –

The album title The Singles: 1969–1973 came from Richard Carpenter because he doesn’t like the term Greatest Hits because he felt it was an overused thing, as he explained to Billboard Magazine in 1973,

“Individuals and groups with two or three hits all of a sudden put them on an album, use filler for the rest and title it “greatest hits”. This album contains eleven true hits and it just wasn’t slapped together. We’ve remixed a few, re-cut one and joined a couple of others. It’s simply something I believe we owe our audience and ourselves”.

Over their 14-year career, the Carpenters toured throughout the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan, Australia, the Netherlands and Belgium & recorded 11 albums, thirty-one singles, five television specials, and a short-lived television series.

Karen Carpenter passed away in 1983 from cardiac arrest following complications of anorexia nervosa.

27th May – The Number One Album In The UK – 2012 (Emeli Sandé – Our Version Of Events)

The No. 1 album on the 27th May, 2012 was from singer-songwriter Emeli Sandé with her debut album Our Version Of Events.

Artist & songwriter Adele Emeli Sandé, (March 10, 1987 in Sunderland, Tyne and Ware, England) known as Emeli Sandé, was nominated at the Brit Awards 2012 for British Breakthrough Act alongside Anna Calvi, Jessie J, The Vaccines and eventual winner Ed Sheeran; Sande went on to win the Critics’ Choice Award where past winners have included Adele & Florence and the Machine.

The range and maturity of the glorious and powerful Sandé voice across the songs on Our Version Of Events, whether in the delicate and introspective piano ballads or the passionate pop-soul, shows an artist embarking upon a lengthy career.

‘While it’s very nice to be noticed, I’m not seduced by fame. What I want is for my music to be remembered. That’s what one of my heroines Nina Simone achieved for herself and no way could you call her an artist who was always on the airwaves. These days nothing lasts. Music is like fast food – you’re in, then out. We choose and consume, feast and forget, then rush on to the next hot thing. There’s no point chasing that kind of success because it’s so transient. Far better to follow your own path and be true to yourself” – Emeli Sandé, Daily Mail, February 2012

The five singles released from Our Version Of Events to date include:

Heaven –

Daddy –

Next To Me –

My Kind of Love –

Clown –

The album has been a stunning commercial success.

“The Official Charts Company can confirm that Emeli Sandé has smashed The Beatles’ chart record of spending the most consecutive weeks in the UK’s Official Albums Chart Top 10 of any debut album.

Our Version Of Events, the debut release from the 2012 BRITs Critics Choice winner which was released in February of last year and went on to become the biggest selling album of 2012, has not dropped out of the Top 10 since its release – that’s a staggering 63 weeks!

In doing so, Sandé overtakes British music icons The Beatles who held the record for almost 50 years previously with Please Please Me. The debut album from the Fab Four spent 62 weeks inside the Top 10 between its release in 1963 and 1964.

Our Version Of Events has to date sold 1.82 million copies in the UK, spending 10 weeks at Number 1 on the Official Albums Chart, and breaking the 100,000 sales in a week tally on three separate occasions. With 429,000 sales racked up already since the new year, the album is leading the way as 2013’s biggest seller also.

Emeli is no stranger to the upper echelons of the Official Singles Chart either, appearing on two Number 1 singles (Read All About It with Professor Green, and Beneath Your Beautiful with Labrinth), and having a total of 9 Top 10 singles under her belt.

“I’m completely lost for words and this is something I could only have dreamed of. The Beatles are the greatest band of all time and their legacy lives on and continues to inspire all of us that make music.  I’m so happy that so many people have connected with the stories and the songs on the record, this really is our version of events now. I’d like to say thankyou to everyone that has bought, played or shared my music in the last year, without your support this would never have been possible” – Emeli Sandé

The album has also enjoyed platinum status in Germany, France, Belgium and Ireland” – Official Charts Company, 28/04/2013

Sandé has also written songs for other artists and to date has penned material for Leona Lewis, Rihanna & Tinie Tempah amongst others.
