On the 24th May, two years ago saw the release of the acoustic rock album Demolished Thoughts from Thurston Moore.
Moore is renowned as the singer, songwriter and guitarist of the sadly defunct Sonic Youth plus a number of eclectic collaborative projects which span books to improvised music projects to narrating documentaries to composing film music, plus runs the Ecstatic Peace! Record label].
When one considers the diversity of the prodigious creative outpost of Moore’s, a random thought springs to my mind – he’s like a Shel Silverstein renaissance man but of avant-rock.
Demolished Thoughts, originally titled Benediction, is the follow up to 2007’s Trees Outside The Academy – his second solo album after Psychic Hearts (1995) – that had been recorded at the home studio of J. Mascis from Dinosaur Jr. with violinist Samara Lubelski and Sonic Youth’s drummer Steve Shelley.
Recorded throughout 2010 and early 2011 in Los Angeles and Massachusetts, Demolished Thoughts was produced by Beck Hansen (who has released 10+ albums of his own including Mellow Gold, Odelay, Sea Change).
The stark beauty of the Demolished Thoughts album resonates with a spacious reflectiveness – highlights for me include Blood Never Lies evoking cinematic imagery circa Schlesinger’s Midnight Cowboy, the compelling Space that sparkles and shines, the hypnotic atmosphere of Orchard Street and the album closer January.
